EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States
The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
