Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors will gain the right to contest specific decisions made by the chair umpire, following the system already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development follows just a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
